Some state environmentalists are pushing for tougher standards from the car industry.
The Illinois Clean Cars Act, would require the average number of cars sold in the state to meet standards that reduce the amount of green house gas emissions.
Proponents say it adds up to big savings.
"We found in Peoria if this legislation was put in place consumers would save about
$17.6 million dollars annually at the gas pump if we have these cleaner cars in the state," said Tracy Wax of Environment Illinois.
So far 13 states have adopted the clean cars standards
